OMG DID YOU KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE HAPPIER WHEN THE WEATHER IS SUPER NICE AND SADDER WHEN THE WEATHER IS SUPER SHITTY?

really? you knew that? everyone knew that? and has known that forever? well, shucks!

EDIT: this was spurred by doing the readings for my psychology class. here is the offending quote from the text book: "Did you know that people's moods tend to fluctuate with seasonal weather patterns? In a recent study, environmental psychologists found that people tended to report more positive moods during pleasant spring weather, whereas the hotter weather during the summer was associated with reports of lower moods."

FUCKING. DUH.

strange dream

Apr. 27th, 2009 | 11:32 am

i had a strange dream last night.

first strange thing: i wasn't me. i was Bill McNeil. that's Phil Hartman's character from the show Newsradio.

anyway, i was getting a tour of Goliath National Bank (the bank from How I Met Your Mother... do you think i watch too much tv?). i don't remember why. but i was walking around the building when i noticed someone in a motorized wheel chair heading toward a door. and since i'm Bill McNeil, i obviously have to get to that door first. so there's this strange death-race type scene in my dream, of me trying to beat someone to a door.

it's a close tie. but the man in the wheelchair won, by mere technicality.

so we both shove through the door in a huff. and it's revealed that it was some sort of practical joke. the man in the wheel chair was just testing something out, and also enjoying the fact that it would make Bill McNeil do something awful. *I* didn't know that this was a joke, but Bill DID know, which was strange, because I was Bill. strange dreams are strange!

once through this new door, we were in a smaller tower that rises next to the GNB building. and this skyscraper was owned by this other guy. i can't remember who he was in my dream. but we were about to bandy some banter when he darts off to something important. well, this obviously drives Bill insane as well!

now, this was all just the set up of the dream, happening very quick. the rest of the dream was me as Bill searching around this building, trying to find the other man and ALSO to snoop as much as possible. through this it was revealed that this man was a major ice tycoon, and i worked for the water company. the building i was snooping around was like a Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of strange items being researched and designed. oh, and there was a Nuclear War Room with backlit maps of the world.

the last thing in the dream was when i had fully snooped out 2-3 floors (including the mans bedroom, which was like a bungalo loft, except wall-to-wall water bed where "ice maids" were trained), i came to the elevator that would lead me to the next area. i pressed the down button (since we came into this building at the top from GNB). i killed a few minutes looking around the War Room until the elevator showed up. when it did, it was an oldschool puppet theater, with heavily gilted carvings and a red velvet curaint. the curtain drew apart as the doors of the elevator, and i saw a remote control shaped like a lion statue. clearly the elevator was a trap, so i snatched up the lion right as the heavy and omenous steel doors of the elevator trap closed (gone were the velevet curtains).

it was at this point, faced with a REAL trap (there had been other smaller pseudo-traps when i looked over the strange inventions in the building) that i said "this is a stupid dream. i'm waking up!" and i did. which was kind of a bummer, cuz i LIKE weird dreams. but i guess not enough to get trapped.

but NOW my subconscious has a golden lion statue remote and i have no clue what it does!

Le Pacte des Loups

Apr. 26th, 2009 | 11:47 am
music: still Against Me!

aka Brotherhood of the Wolf

i just watched this movie last night, and all i can say is FANTASTIC.

ok, i lied! i have a lot more to say! this is definitely one of the best movies i've seen. it has EVERYTHING. the best i can describe it is a mix of mystery, horror, and action. except it's a love story. and a bromance flick. oh, and it's a semi-historic period piece. just about the only genre it doesn't mix in is comedy. it sounds overly ambitious, but it handles it all SO WELL. and it's also absolutely BEAUTIFUL. the scenery and cinematography are stunning (think Hero without the CGI, although perhaps less dramatic).

it's not a PERFECT movie, or THE best movie, but it's really near the top of my list. the end fight scene was kinda dumb, and there were a number of false endings. but that's the extent of complaints i can make against it.

i will definitely be recommending this to everyone for years to come.

Hard Hitting Investigative Journaling!

Apr. 6th, 2009 | 07:15 pm
music: Kristin Hersh

what would you do if you found out that your best friend and your sibling were dating/getting it on?

this is a two-fold issue though. there's the concept of it (what would you do if you found out that A best friend of yours and A sibling of yours were dating/getting it on?) and then there's the REALITY of it (what would you do if you found out that YOUR best friend and YOUR sibling were dating/getting it on?).

on the conceptual level, i'm sure most people would be fine with it (well, of the people I know, anyway). we all want to follow the higher ground and have relatively enlightened views on sex, love, and relationships.

but thinking about it REALLY happening in REALITY is WAY weirder.

Wanted (comics)

Mar. 11th, 2009 | 09:43 am
music: the Murder City Devils

well, i just read the 6 part series, Wanted, on which the recent action movie starring Angelina Jolie was loosely based.

the short of it: Not Impressed.

the premise of the comics (differing greatly from the movie) is that in the 80s, all the supervillains banded together and eradicated all superheros and now control the entire world. Wesley, the main character, is a pushover until he learns he's a supervillain too, at which point he becomes a fucking dickhead.

so the comic boils down to a similar message as the movie: Just do something with your life or you'll be a smear on the sidewalk. unfortunately, the comic's presentation of this message is bogged down with rape and senseless murder amidst plenty of racism and homophobia. in the end, i came away with a more specific message: Do whatever the fuck you want as long as you're completely immune to all consequences and repercussions.

if you think about it, that's a pretty worthless message. and most definitely not worth the unsavory aspects permeating the details of the story.

there is a chance that the series has a deeper meaning. perhaps they really meant to say: Bad guys are dicks. Don't be a bad guy. the comics do make the life of a supervillain seem pretty unappealing, after all.

so the long version of the short of it: either the comic is a largely worthless piece of nerdy angst-porn, or it fails at conveying its message in a meaningful fashion.

EDIT: i should probably mention that the unabashed inundation of AWESOME that was present in the movie was not present in the comics. there was some badass shit in the comics, but nothing close to the movie. (of course, the movie was also awful in its own special way.)

TV Ratings - lend a hand!

Feb. 26th, 2009 | 06:36 am
music: Eye of the Tiger by Jensen Ackles

so, i read some articles lately saying that some awesome shows on TV have been getting bad ratings! that sucks! you know what sucks more? when good shows get bad ratings, the TV stations cancel them and give us more mind-numbing shit to watch! FUCK THAT.

so! i figure an easy thing to do is just to give good shows some more traffic! visit the shows' websites a few times (maybe every day!) and you can watch them online frequently, too! last night i queued up 2 shows and played them while i went to the grocery store! why? because downloading them via bit torrent and watching them that way doesn't get noticed (in the good way) by the stations! so i gave them the good kind of hits too! yay!

so i guess this is mostly a PSA. if there are TV shows you like, give them some hits. don't just be an idle fan, because then your shows are gonna get cut and that is not cool! it takes almost NO EFFORT AT ALL, so all my lazy friends have no excuses! ;)

now some specifics... maybe it's hearsay or reactionism, but CHUCK has been getting shitty ratings and MIGHT GET CANCELED. no one wants that! the miniscule effort it takes to support a show is worth even the slightest chance it might get axed.
